CineGamer #44: Star Wars Battle of Hoth & LOTR Fate of the Fellowship

Jason and Toby are back with two very new nerdy IPS that are re-themes of older games! First up is Star Wars Battle of Hoth, which uses the Memoir ’44 battle system to fight your opponent on the planet Hoth! Then there’s Lord of the Rings Fate of the Fellowship which uses the Pandemic system to get the Ring to the volcano place while other characters do magical things? (Jason has never been into Lord of the Rings and finds the whole thing confusing at best.)

    I haven’t played Batle of Hoth but I have played other Command and Colors games that aren’t Memoir ’44 like C&C Ancients and Battlelore and I think it’s a great system. I’m looking forward to playing this one when I get the opportunity. My brother has it so I may get the chance one day.

    I am open to playing it again but I think I am closer to Jason on Fate of the Fellowship after my first play and I say that as someone who loves LOTR. It didn’t click and I thought it would since Fall of Rome is my favorite Pandemic and this heavily borrows some elements from it.

    I think the map is extremely hard to read and the mechanisms while thematic don’t all mesh for me. I also generally don’t like how much it relies on die rolls for something that I don’t consider a straight war game like War of the Ring.
